Martha Alvarez Montero
An experienced art director as well as an artist specialising in ceramics, Martha Alvarez Montero has an affinity for playing and experimenting with raw materials. She has a particular interest in the handmade and the personal.
Martha cut her teeth making displays in NYC for top brands like Chanel, Dior and Hermes while also working as a production designer for TV, film and advertising. Around this time she was selected as featured artist in the 2011 New York Designboom Mart. Returning to Mexico City she has continued as an art director on numerous projects in both art and advertising, including as senior production designer for the 2015 Zona Maco contemporary art fair. For Zona Maco she was in charge of the look and feel of the fair, including the visual guidelines for the galleries, as well as managing the production of the restaurants and bars.
She has also pursued her personal projects as an artist and designer. In 2012 she was invited to do a residency with the prestigious Portuguese porcelain and crystal brand Vista Alegre Atlantis developing new products. The series “Pratos dos Amantes Loucos”, one of the results of the residency, was selected to be showcased at Fabrica’s “Mobile Museum” in Hong Kong.
In 2016 she returned to Zona Maco, this time exhibiting her own products (the series “Barcos” and “Totem”), as well as delivering a lecture on her creative process at the Inmaterial Experimental design and architecture conference at the Universidad Autónoma in Querétaro.
